The 5th International Conference on Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Opens in Hohai University

From May 10 to 12, the 5th International Conference on Hydraulic and Civil Engineering (ICHCE 2019) was held successfully in Hohai University, which was organized by Academic Exchange Information Center and co-sponsored by more than twenty universities, research institutes and enterprises. The theme of the conference is the Belt and Road Initiative and its innovative cooperation with hydraulic and civil engineering. Professor CHEN Houqun of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor ZHANG Chuhan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Vice Chairman of the International Commission on Large Dams, Chief Engineer ZHOU Jianping of the Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), Chairman of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Associate Vice President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Charles W. W. Ng, Professor XU Hui, President of Hohai University, and Professor XU Weiya, Vice President of Hohai University attended the opening ceremony. XU Weiya, vice President of Hohai Universiy, hosted the opening ceremony.

XU Hui, president of Hohai University delivered a welcoming speech, saying that Hohai University, as a Double-first Class discipline construction university with hydraulic characteristics, is closely coordinated with the major needs of the national strategy and the industry to build a world-class hydraulic discipline as well as a science and technology highland with Chinese characteristics, and speed up the construction of a research-oriented university. Encouraged by the Belt and Road Initiative, hydraulic and civil engineering disciplines will embrace both opportunities and challenges of Going Out and creating win-win results. Chief Engineer ZHOU Jianping and Professor Charles W. W. Ng on behalf of the International Commission on Large Dams and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering gave speeches respectively.

On the morning of May 11, Professor CHEN Houqun, Professor ZHANG Chuhan, Professor ZHOU Jianping, Professor Charles W.W.Ng, Professor GU Chongshi, Dean of School of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Hohai University, Professor CHEN Shengshui, Dean of Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (FU Zhongzhi attended instead), and other six experts made keynote speeches on seismic safety of large dams, water resources, hydropower development, green slope, health diagnosis of large projects, and key technologies of super-high slab dams. In the afternoon, Professor SONG Chongmin of the University of New South Wales, Dr. James E Lindell, Honorary Senior Vice President, Stackelberg Engineering, USA, Professor HoKyung Kim, Seoul University, Professor H. Yamamoto, Hiroshima University, Professor WU Chengqing, University of Technology Sydney, WANG Renkun, Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer of Chengdu Survey and Design Research Institute of the Power Construction Corporation of China, Chairman of the Special Committee on Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction of the Geotechnical Engineering of the Seismological Society of China, Professor CHEN guoxing of Nanjing Tech University, director of Commission on Geotechnical Earthquake and Hazard Mitigation of Seismological Society of China, Professor ZHANG Zongliang, vice general manager and chief engineer of POWERCHINA Kunming Engineering Corporation Limited, Professor ZHOU Wei, vice dean of Graduate School of Wuhan University, Professor WANG Jingquan, dean of Civil Engineering of Southeast University and other eight experts made reports respectively. On May 12, four sessions were set up, namely, hydraulic structure, water and sand, structural materials and geotechnical engineering.

Professor GU Chongshi and Professor ZHANG Liaojun of Hohai University are the chairmen of the academic committee and the organizing committee respectively. More than 400 experts from more than 90 units, including universities such as Tsinghua UniversityChina Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research , and the Huadong Engineering of the Power Construction of China Corporation Limited. More than 400 papers were received and nearly 80 academic reports were presented at the conference. This conference has played an important role in supporting and promoting the cooperative development of water conservancy, civil engineering and other related disciplines.
